The World Bank has defined that a person is living in extreme poverty if they are surviving on the equivalent of AUD$2 a day, Purchasing Power Parity adjusted. Currently, 26% of the world’s population lives under this “extreme poverty line”, which covers a person’s food, shelter, education, health and transport costs.

From May 7th to 11th, ECOMS is taking the “Live Below the Line” challenge. This means that our dedicated team of willing and able committee members will be living on food costs of less than $2 a day – which is quite a large effort considering that the average Australian lives on $94.33 per day.* We are doing this to raise awareness of the extreme poverty issue, and to raise funds for education initiatives in developing countries – so that children living in poverty are better equipped to help fight their way out.

This year, funds raised are going to the Papua New Guinea region: a country which is our closest neighbour, but could not be more different than ourselves.

Our fundraising goal is $2,000. If you would like to donate to our cause, or even join ECOMS in our hunger strike to fight poverty, click on this link to go to our Live Below the Line page: https://www.livebelowtheline.com/team/ecoms-uwa

The Boston Consulting Group is currently ranked second on Fortune’s ’100 Best Companies to Work For’ list. It is one of only two firms to have been ranked in the top dozen for six consecutive years. The Boston Consulting Group is also one of the most prestigious consulting firms in the world.

But, what is management consulting and how do you get your foot in the door? Representatives from the Perth office of The Boston Consulting Group will be on campus Tuesday 28th February to answer all of your burning questions about the industry, the firm and what it takes to get a job at one the world’s most sought after employers.

Consulting firms tend to hire anyone from engineering and law graduates to finance and arts graduates, however, positions are scarce . Come to the Law Lecture Theatre (above the Moot Court in the Law Courtyard) at 1pm on Tuesday Week 1 to gain a very valuable insight into how to overcome the rigorous application process and join the elite ranks of BCG management consultants. This is one of only five Careers Presentations being run by Blackstone in 2012, and certainly one not to be missed.
